Proper piercing Aftercare
The time it takes for a piercing to heal depends on the location of the piercing, the person, and other factors. Here are some approximate healing times for different types of piercings:
-
Face: Earlobes, eyebrows, typically heal in 6–8 weeks
-
Nostril: Can take 2–8 months to heal
-
Lip: 3-6 months to heal
-
Nipple: Can take 6–12 months to heal
-
Ear cartilage: Can take 9 months or more to heal
-
Navel: Can take 6 - 12 months or more to heal
-
While a piercing may look healed, it can take several months to fully heal.
-
Wash your hands thoroughly BEFORE cleaning or touching your piercing for any reason.
-
Using mild (fragrance-free, alcohol-free) soap, gently lather around the piercing.
-
Rinse area thoroughly to remove all traces of soap from the piercing.
-
Use saline rinse 2-3 times daily during healing on the front and back of your piercing. Allow it to sit wet for approximately 5 minutes, wash off with warm water and pat dry.
-
Refrain from unnecessary handling of the piercing. This means no twisting, turning, or removal of the jewelry. This can cause trauma to your new piercing and lengthen the healing process.
-
Avoid sleeping on your piercing, as the pressure may result in soreness, changing of the piercing’s angle and the development of unwanted scar tissue.
*Infections, while rare, can almost always be prevented by following your aftercare instructions and taking good general care of yourself. Signs of infection include fever, and redness and heat emanating from the piercing. If you have any concerns contact your artist and/or physician/dermatologist.
